Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti acknowledged the need for self-reflection following a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home against Fiorentina, which leaves the Bianconeri two points shy of a Champions League spot with just one match left in the season.
Spalletti displayed signs of frustration during his interview with Sky Sport on Sunday. When asked about the importance of the match, which was dubbed the “game of their lives,” Spalletti countered: “Beginning with such phrases leads to a poor start.”

“The notion that everything is finished and we are all doomed is incorrect,” he remarked.
“Clearly, this is a devastating result. It was a crucial match.”
Weeks back, Spalletti mentioned he hadn’t fully grasped his team’s dynamics; does he feel more confident now?
“My evaluation is based not just on today’s performance. The players have achieved some remarkable things; there has been significant development, and they have created the groundwork for future success,” he reflected.

“We needed to showcase our ability to play quality football and exhibit character today,” he mentioned.
“I need to first scrutinize myself rather than focus solely on the players. As I told them post-match, if this is the level we are delivering, I should primarily evaluate my own contributions before reflecting on theirs,” Spalletti stated.
“The performance was lacking in numerous areas,” he acknowledged.
“We also experienced some misfortune. We fell behind 1-0 without conceding many chances. Our start was poor; we lost too many challenges and failed to create a lively atmosphere in the stadium.”
Juventus conceded after Fiorentina registered their first shot on target.
This marked the 16th instance this season where the Old Lady conceded from their opponent’s very first attempt.

“I need to ensure this doesn’t recur. I must address this issue and strive to cultivate a calm mindset among the players, helping them make sound decisions, find the right positions, play assertively, and deliver clean passes,” Spalletti explained.
“These elements can rally the support of the crowd. Unfortunately, we fell short in fulfilling these expectations.”
“We understand the financial implications of not qualifying for the Champions League, but framing this as a life-or-death situation is misguided. This is simply a football match,” he asserted.
“Players need to maintain composure; our playing style is vital, and it has been a significant factor in our journey here.”

In April, Spalletti signed a contract extension with Juventus, securing his position until 2028.
“I have a clear understanding of my players and myself; I’ve known who I am for 68 years, and I’ve always navigated life’s journey alone,” Spalletti reflected.
“First and foremost, I need to evaluate myself. Have I done everything to place them in an optimal mental state? The mental aspect is crucial. I must have a conversation with myself before anything else,” he concluded.

Juventus needed to find the net in the second half, yet Lois Openda and Jonathan David remained on the bench throughout the match. Spalletti had requested a new forward during the January transfer window; would Juve’s fate have changed had they secured a new striker then?
“It’s pointless to speculate about that. My focus should have been on performing well in this match,” he replied.
“We’ve been doing fairly well. I believe certain elements are clear, yet we find ourselves in a position where [the Champions League] is an opportunity that Juventus and their supporters rightfully deserve,” he concluded.
