Simo Valakari, the manager of St Johnstone, believes that St Mirren has been flying “under the radar” this season.
Craig McLeish’s team started their Premiership campaign with a 2-0 victory over Falkirk, who surprised many last season.

Additionally, they triumphed in three out of four League Cup group stage matches, netting 12 goals and securing advancement to the next round as they aim to defend their title.
Valakari, whose St Johnstone squad made a swift return to the Premiership after being relegated to the Championship last year, has been impressed by what he has observed thus far.
“I’ve been really impressed,” he remarked.
“From my perspective, they faced a tough season last year, managing to survive through the play-offs. Now, they’ve been able to refine their game, and I can see their strategy taking shape.
“They’ve recruited talented players while maintaining the traditional toughness associated with St Mirren, showing a desire to be aggressive and assertive.

“They have experience in the Premiership, but perhaps the most significant factor is that not much was expected of them, which is why they’re somewhat overlooked.
“I’ve been closely monitoring them. I’ve noticed their approach in pre-season matches, and their identity is quite clear, as demonstrated in their opening league game.
“They faced Falkirk, a challenging venue with its pitch and atmosphere—no away game in this league is easy.
“They managed to play a solid match, knowing when to retain possession and when to make vertical, dangerous runs.

“That’s the performance I anticipated from them, and they now see this as an opportunity, having won their first match and heading into their home game. They’re building momentum, which makes it a tough but exciting challenge for us.”
