A regrettable incident during the 2026 World Cup led to a five-match suspension for Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo, whose reckless tackle caused a leg injury to Canada‘s Ismaël Koné during their group stage match on Thursday.
At the moment, a visibly remorseful Madibo was shown a red card. On Wednesday, FIFA’s disciplinary committee sanctioned him with the suspension for serious foul play, a ruling that can be appealed.

After the match, Madibo, who expressed deep remorse for the harm caused, visited the Canada locker room to apologize to Koné, as confirmed by Canada manager Jesse Marsch, reported by The Athletic.
Recently, photos emerged showing the two players sharing an embrace:
Due to his red card, Madibo, 29, was also ruled out of Qatar’s 3-1 loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. If Qatar had progressed to the knockout stage, Madibo’s suspension would have carried over to any remaining matches.
As Qatar currently sits at the bottom of Group B and won’t compete again in this tournament, Madibo’s entire five-match ban will extend beyond this World Cup.

The incident occurred in the second half of Canada’s 6-0 triumph last Thursday. The devastating injury overshadowed the co-hosts’ historic first World Cup victory.
Koné, a 24-year-old midfielder for Sassuolo, has successfully undergone surgery to repair the broken tibia and fibula of his left leg, as reported by The Associated Press.
Upon being wheeled onto the pitch at BC Place in Vancouver on Wednesday, he received a standing ovation from the crowd before Canada’s final group match, which resulted in a 2-1 defeat to Group B champion Switzerland. Consequently, Canada ends the group stage in second place and will travel to Los Angeles to face the runner-up from Group A on Sunday.

While Madibo’s penalty is significant, it is not the most severe punishment issued by FIFA in World Cup history. For example, during the 2014 tournament in Brazil, Uruguay striker Luis Suárez received a nine-match suspension along with a four-month ban from all soccer activities after he bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.
