Cherif Fofana is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the most promising young talents emerging from Real Madrid’s youth academy.
According to AS, the 16-year-old defensive midfielder has become one of the standout players of Real Madrid’s pre-season, impressing José Mourinho during the initial training sessions.

With many senior players away due to the World Cup, Mourinho has brought in 16 academy players to train with the first team, and very few have left a stronger impression than Fofana.
Those familiar with Fofana often call him “little Kante” because of his relentless energy, defensive acumen, and unwavering work ethic.
At 1.79 meters tall, he may not be the biggest midfielder, but he plays with an intensity and maturity that have made him one of the most exciting prospects in the academy.

Originally from Alcala, he spent a year at Mexico FC before joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2025. It quickly became apparent to academy staff that they had secured a rare talent.
After his initial matches with the Juvenil C team, coaches predicted he wouldn’t remain there long. By October, just six league games into the season, he was promoted to Juvenil B.
His development continued rapidly from there.
He became a regular starter, earning another promotion to Juvenil A, participated in the Copa del Rey Juvenil, and played the full 120 minutes at Old Trafford during the Premier League International Cup match.

Days later, he achieved another milestone by making his Castilla debut, appearing off the bench against Cacereno toward the end of the season.

As the new season approaches, the prevailing question has shifted from whether he’s ready for advancement to simply how soon that will happen.
A Modern Defensive Midfielder
Cherif is a right-footed holding midfielder whose primary strength lies in regaining possession.
He excels at anticipating danger, covering ground, and disrupting the opponent’s play while also demonstrating the composure and technical skills expected from a contemporary midfielder.

His combination of aggressive defending, smart positioning, solid tackling, and precise distribution has fueled comparisons to N’Golo Kante.
Mourinho is Watching
At just 16, Fofana exhibits a confidence and determination that belies his age. This mindset has been particularly evident during his training sessions with Mourinho.
Despite being one of the youngest participants, he shows no signs of intimidation when training alongside established professionals under one of the most demanding managers in football.
Within Real Madrid, there is a growing consensus that Fofana is a talent worth keeping an eye on.
